Teenagers

Support for Teenagers
Teenagers are in a transformative phase of life where their brains are evolving in remarkable ways. They transition from concrete thinking as children, to exploring and expressing their emotions, and developing advanced reasoning and decision-making skills. This crucial period allows them to discover their identities and passions through new experiences and social interactions that shape their values and preferences, as they begin to separate from their parents and form their own ideas and interests.
However, those who have faced complex trauma and other childhood challenges may encounter difficulties with self-confidence, identity, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression during this time. Therapy can be beneficial in addressing these issues. The pressures of fitting in with peers, especially during middle school and high school, can be intensified by social media, which can hinder face-to-face interactions that are vital for their development. The aim of therapy for teenagers is to foster a supportive environment where they can process their feelings, express themselves, and learn coping strategies to deal with trauma, anxiety, and relationship challenges.
Helping teens connect to their core strengths and values is essential for making life choices. In my work with teenagers, I adopt a similar approach to that used with adults, valuing their inherent wisdom. I incorporate body-centered techniques such as EMDR, IFS, Brainspotting, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy to help them develop inner strength, confidence, and a connection to their core values and interests.
